DESCRIPTION:LEARN ABOUT: \nMissions of a military helicopter \nHow to become a military pilot \nScience & technology of aircraft \nOther opportunities in the military \nHow the Navy\, Marine Corps & Coast Guard protect our country \nEach October\, Navy League Memphis coordinates this unique event for the Memphis area.  The 2019 Naval Air Orientation Day will be held Thursday\, Oct. 3th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hundreds of students from Memphis-area schools\, STEM programs\, JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Traning Corps) units and homeschool programs are invited to come view and tour military aircraft\, vintage warbirds\, and a Coast Guard Fast Response boat!  This is a one-of-a-kind experience and opportunity for the youth of our area. SUMMARY:Paddle Off the War Vets Visit Memphis
DESCRIPTION:Marine Corporal Joshua Ploetz (USMC) has made a brief stop in our very own Memphis\, TN on his “Paddle Off the War” journey down the Mississippi River.Cpl. Ploetz is a combat veteran and began his journey on May 19th from Lake Itasca in Minnesota. His overall journey\, totaling 2\,350 miles over 64 days in a one-man canoe\, is part of Josh’s ongoing effort to address his combat related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Cpl. Ploetz has named his journey\, “Paddle Off the War.” \nOn Monday\, July 14th\, Shelby County Commissioner Heidi Shafer\, along with Memphis Navy League Council members led by President Charles Beech\, welcomed Joshua at 3:00 p.m. on the north side of the new Beale Street Landing facility in downtown Memphis. \nCpl. Ploetz served two tours of duty in Afghanistan with the 3rd Marine Regiment as a machine gunner. He is committed to conquering the hidden war which rages within him and many veterans returning from conflicts around the world. \nJoshua would like to promote PTSD awareness and the mission of the Baton which he is carrying in his canoe from Lake Itasca to Venice\, LA\, by raising money to support fellow wounded warriors and sufferers of PTSD. His route can be found on the Allied Forces Foundation website\, and he asks that you visit the site and support him and his cause. All funds raised will go to support fellow wounded warriors and sufferers of PTSD here in the USA. \nNavy League Memphis presented Joshua with a check for $1000.00\, donated by council members\, during his stop in Memphis. \nVisit the website to donate HERE \n \nNavy League Memphis Council President Charles Beech assisted by council member Trish Sorce\, presents a check for $1000.00 to Josh Ploetz and his cause “Paddle Off the War” \n \nEvent sponsors Walker and Ann Ulhorn greet Corporal Ploetz. \n \nCorporal Ploetz addresses the local media with his “highway”\, the Mighty Mississippi\, in the background.

SUMMARY:Mid-South Excellence Honored at 2017 Banquet
DESCRIPTION:Mid-South Excellence Honored at 2017 Banquet\nThe “best-of-the-best” of Mid-South Sea Service Units were recently saluted at the Navy League Memphis Council’s 2017 Spring Awards Banquet.  Rear Admiral Richard A. Brown\, Commander\, Navy Personnel Command/Deputy Chief of Naval Personnel\, updated Navy Leaguers and attending Navy personnel on the challenges and highlights of our Navy’s recruiting opportunities before he presented awards to the individuals who were chosen as the best Sailors\, Marines\, Coast Guardsmen and NROTC Midshipmen from the Mid-South area. \nScholarship awards were presented to Naval ROTC Midshipmen at University of Memphis and University of Mississippi.  This scholarship program provides financial support to select midshipmen in their first and second years of undergraduate education and officer training.  This unique program is intended to support students who desire to receive their officer commission in the U.S. Navy or U.S. Marine Corps\, but were not initially selected for national scholarship programs.  All were selected for these awards based not only upon academic achievement but also for physical fitness and demonstrated officer qualities.   Awards proceedings are pictured below. \n \nRDML Richard Brown shares sea stories and remarks with awardees\, their guests\, and members of the Navy League Memphis Council and ANA El Dorado Chapter. \n********** \nFirst to be honored were Midshipmen from the Universities of Memphis and Ole Miss. \n \nNavy League Scholarship Chairman\, Buz Sorce\, announced the awards for each scholarship recipient.  RDML Brown\, CAPT Brian Goszkowitz (CO of Naval ROTC Mid-South) and Navy League President\, David Sutton\, congratulated each scholarship awardee.  The midshipmen pictured above were presented with a scholarship check in recognition of their Outstanding Academic and Military performance.  These midshipmen are: \n\nMIDN 4/C Matthew Jones\nMIDN 4/C Colton Kirby\nMIDN 4/C Cullen Schwartz\nMIDN 4/C Austin Tuohy\n\n \n1/C Matthew Gumpert is recognized as the Outstanding NROTC Honor graduate from the University of Mississippi.  He is presented with the Sword Award by David Sutton\, Navy League Memphis President.  Also pictured:  RDML Brown and CAPT Goskowicz. \n \n1/C Casey Guthrie is recognized as the Outstanding NROTC Honor graduate from the University of Memphis.  He is presented with the Sword Award by David Sutton\, Navy League Memphis President.  Also pictured:  RDML Brown and CAPT Goskowicz. \nNext to be honored were our Sailors of the Year from the Naval Support Activity Mid-South\, pictured below: \n \nMC1 (SW) Jeff Atherton of Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South was presented with the 2016 Sailor of the Year award.  Congratulating him are CMDCM Marilyn Kennard\, Command Master Chief of NSA Mid-South\, RDML Brown and David Sutton. \n \nYN2 (SW) Jordan G.
